[b:4eddce10d6]Bowl in the Shape of a Lotus Leaf [/b:4eddce10d6] Sung to Ming Dynasties (10th-17th c.) Jade; length, 15.2 cm; width, 5.9 cm; height, 9 cm With the exception of the base, which retains hints of the original yellowish- green of the nephrite, this vessel has turned a yellowish-brown with grayish mottling and sporadic ocher pigmentation in the carved lines. It is shaped after a withered and upturned lotus leaf that tapers in triangular fashion. The leaf is curved and creased at the edge, and its veins are rendered on the outer surface in paired intaglio lines. The stalk forms a ring at the base and ascends along the edge of the bowl. The arrangement not only adds to the variation in form, but also serves a practical function as the foot and handle of the bowl. The design resembles a white jade lotus leaf bowl that was unearthed from the Southern Sung (1127-1279) tomb of Shih Sheng-tsu in Chu-chou county, Chekiang province. Its method of manufacture, however, is evidently more mature. The padauk stand is carved in layered openwork into the semblance of lotuses, augmenting the elegant beauty of the bowl. The eminent Chinese artist-writer Su Tung-p'o once described a morning drink as "watering the mind." This humorous expression suggests that an intellectual who has not enjoyed success may be melancholy but should not give up his ideals and hopes. It was thus perhaps from sorrow that, in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), Ch'en Hung-shou treated the subject of a "morning drink" in his "Sixteen Views of Reclusion" (also in the National Palace Museum collection). The painting shows Su seated on a wooden chair holding a lotus leaf cup much like the one shown here. In this context, the cup symbolizes the refusal of the literatus to bow under adversity. * 以上,轉載自故宮博物院典藏說明,英文部分重新段落編輯。 天下文壇 天下文壇 畢泠 2005-02-27 20:52 http://yuhsia.com/ccb/index.pl |
